Throughout history, humans have used visual symbols and drawings to communicate thoughts and emotions. Across cultures and disciplines, drawing remains a powerful form of self-expression, allowing individuals to convey feelings that words may not fully capture.
At Olive Grove, we recognize the importance of this creative outlet, especially for the young people we support. Drawing enables them to express dreams, desires, worries, and preoccupations that might otherwise remain unspoken. We work with the belief:
“If only you could tell me what’s wrong, then I might be able to help you.”
What is Drawing and Talking Therapy?
Drawing and Talking Therapy is a structured, therapeutic intervention consisting of 12 weekly sessions, each lasting 30 minutes. It provides a gentle, non-intrusive approach for young people to process emotions and experiences through their drawings. Unlike Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) or direct talk-based therapies, which can sometimes feel confrontational or restrictive, Drawing and Talking Therapy offers a more accessible and comfortable alternative. It is designed to complement CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) and other specialist support services.
How the Sessions Work
Sessions take place in a secure, private space, free from interruptions. The young person will be informed about what to expect in each session, and all work remains confidential unless they disclose information that indicates a risk to themselves or others. Their drawings will be kept safe in a personal folder, stored securely in a locked cupboard, and returned to them at the end of the intervention.
