Special Educational Needs

Supporting Children with Special Educational needs at Olive Grove Learning

At Olive Grove Learning, we believe that every child deserves a nurturing, supportive environment where they can flourish. Many of the young people in our care have experienced challenges that impact their emotional well-being and behaviour. Our dedicated team provides tailored support to help them build confidence, resilience, and the skills they need for a brighter future.

What are Emotional Behaviourial Difficulties EBD

EBD is a term used to describe children and young people who experience severe emotional distress, which can affect their ability to form relationships, engage in learning, and regulate their behaviour. This can be caused by a range of factors, including trauma, neglect, attachment difficulties, or neurodevelopmental conditions like ADHD and autism.

Children with EBD may:

  • Struggle with anxiety, depression, or mood swings.

  • Find it difficult to manage anger or frustration.

  • Have difficulty forming trusting relationships.

  • Experience low self-esteem or a negative self-image.

  • Display challenging behaviours as a way to communicate unmet needs.

How We Support Children with EBD

At Olive Grove Learning, we recognize that behaviour is often a form of communication. Rather than focusing solely on discipline, we take a therapeutic and relational approach to help children express their emotions in healthy ways.

  •  A Therapeutic Environment – Our home is designed to feel safe, calm, and welcoming, providing children with stability and consistency.

  • Specialist Staff – Our highly trained team includes professionals experienced in trauma-informed care, de-escalation techniques learnt through Team Teach training, and emotional regulation strategies like the use of Forest Schools and Drawing and Talking.

  • Tailored Learning & Development – Every child is unique, so we develop individual learning plans that meet their needs, focusing on both academic progress and personal development.

  •  Emotional Support & Well-being – We incorporate mindfulness, creative expression, and physical activity into daily routines to help children manage their emotions effectively. We encourage all our children to join school clubs and youth clubs and ensure their interests are nurtured.

  •  Building Positive Relationships – Through nurturing relationships with trusted adults, children learn to develop emotional security and resilience.

Empowering Every Child For a Brighter Future

We believe that no child should be defined by their difficulties. At Olive Grove Learning, we focus on strengths, potential, and possibilities — helping young people regain trust in themselves and others, develop essential life skills, and move towards independence with confidence.

'  Children are happy living at this home. Children have trusted relationships with staff and benefit from staying connected with the adults who cared for them long after children move on from the home.  Children make lots of progress while living at the home. They are treated as individuals and are supported to become more independent. This results in children developing essential skills for adulthood. One child said they feel the home has stabilised them.'
